“Muffin Top”, “Love Handles”, “Hip Rolls” or just plain annoying, are the bulges on the sides above the hips. They are unwanted fatty deposits seen in both men and women. The cause for these “Love Handles” seems to be hormonal and some what gender specific. In men the “love handles” are usually at a slightly higher level and fill the lower parts of the flanks. The reason why they seem to be under the influence of hormones is because of their difference in shape and location and lack of response dieting and exercising. The size of the Love Handles can increase with weight gain but may not disappear with exercise and diet or may easily appear at the first sign of weight gain.

FDA Banned and Subsequently Allowed Silicone Implants

Why did the FDA ban silicone implants in the first place?

The ban occurred for a number of reasons:

Ø Pressure from the media, trial lawyers, and various activist groups was intense after the Connie Chung show in 1990.

Ø There was fear that they were not safe.

Ø They were never approved by the FDA to begin with. They were “grandfathered in 1976 when the FDA began the process of approval as a formal process.

Even though there was a large amount of research including animal data and human data on the safety of these devices, the FDA elected to take implants off the market entirely at first and then allowed their use in reconstruction only. As of November 17, 2006 the FDA lifted the ban on the use of silicone implants for breast augmentation surgery. This was because 14 years of research in the U.S. and abroad found no connection between silicone implants and all the diseases claimed by women to be associated with their silicone implants. That means that women desiring breast augmentation surgery have the option of choosing a silicone gel filled implant for her augmentation. This choice will have a number of requirements imposed by the FDA. The FDA is requiring, or at least strongly suggesting, MRI examinations after the first three years and every two years following that. Also the patient must be a minimum of 22 years of age (18 years of age minimum for saline implants).

Many of us may think that a seemingly small imbalance, such as inverted nipples of the breast should not be of great concern in our overall appearance or self worth. Unfortunately this is a common issue that does seem to have a profound impact on those who have lived with nipple inversion for quite sometime.

Lack of Sensuality and Functionality
Not only may it be aesthetically unappealing to the eye of the beholder, but it can carry other complications as well. In some cases the absence of nipple stimulation can cause a lack of sensual femininity about their bare body and sexuality. In severe cases however, nipple stimulation does not correct the problem.

How can Nipple Inversion be corrected?
What many do not realize, is the ease and quick recovery of Inverted Nipple Correction surgery.
This surgery requires a procedure that disconnects the ligaments allowing the nipple to rise to its natural projection. Surgery is performed through a minimal incision, leaving a minimal, if any, scar. Local anesthetic is all that is required. The operation is not overly painful and post operative discomfort is easily controlled with prescribed pain medication.

Plastic Surgeon Dr. Ivan Thomas Repairs Gauged Earlobe

When you are young it may seem like a good idea to place an extremely large earring in your ear. However, as you get older, or if you are trying to look for employment, a person may grow tired of the extremely large hole in their ear. It may be difficult to find a skilled surgeon, who may or may not be able to repair the damage of stretched earlobe piercing.

This much is true for Patient Eric Anderson. Who in his teenage years began Gauge piercing his ears. Now that he is 32 years old he wants to become an EMT and his possible employers have told him because of safety reasons he cannot pursue his new found career goals. After searching for the right person to repair his ears he realizes that it is not an “easy” fix.

Eric came to Dr. Thomas with over 1” openings in his ear lobes.

Patient had Gauged Piercing Repaired

His ornate collection of Gauge earrings range from bamboo discs to flashy rhinestone hoops. Eric say’s “it was a conscious decision” when he began the Gauging process. Now he wants to have his earlobes repaired from the years of stretching and he knows that it will take a skilled plastic surgeon to complete the procedure. This type of repair is so new that there is not even a term in Plastic Surgery for it.

This story has grabbed the attention of the media. In fact that story was featured on ABC’s Channel 7, Los Angeles with Medical Reporter, Denise Dador, on August 18th 2009. Eric’s case is quite unique in that the ear tissue has been pulled and stretched so much, that not much of the normal ear tissue is intact. Watch the story on ABC.

Dr. Thomas had to use his T-incision advanced technique to repair the earlobe. A procedure of this nature will have to be performed under anesthesia and the procedures can take up to 5 hours. The cost to repair an earlobe of this nature can run anywhere from $1,500 to $3,000 per ear.

Eric’s Update:

Eric’s surgery was completed successfully and he is recovery right now. The stitches have been removed however it will be few months before we will see the brilliant results of his earlobe repair.

Plastic Surgery Before and After Photos – What to look for

Just recently I saw a piece on ABC 7 about a laser center that has doctors on staff that are not board certified plastic surgeons (American Board of Plastic Surgery). I will not even begin to talk about that aspect. However I do want to address the thing that I noticed the most. The before and after photos of the Plastic Surgery Patients were terrible. To the untrained eye, sure the after shots look different from the before, however different isn’t always a good thing when it comes to bad Plastic Surgery.

The before & after photos that many cosmetic practices show on their website, if you know what to look for, show terrible results. Terrible Plastic Surgery Before & After Photo results are: lumpy and bumpy skin, patients who still have loose and hanging skin, Lipo-suctioned parts of the body that have deep dents and grooves, breast lifts where nipples have been placed too high, the list goes on and on.

Good Plastic Surgery Before & After Photos

So what do good Plastic Surgery Before and After photos look like? There are so many thing to look for. Is the skin smooth and is there symmetry? Does the skin on the stomach from a Tummy Tuck look tight but not over stretched and shiny? Are there deep groves (cannula marks) form the over-suctioning of fat? There are more than the simple visual factors to consider. What about Patients who are not candidates for a procedure because of skin laxity, however they get cattle called into a procedure?

The Wrong Procedure for the wrong Candidate

There are so many practitioners out there that are not certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, performing procedures for rock bottom pricing, only to leave patients with unrecoverable photographed evidence of botched plastic surgery.

Many clinics will cattle call patients. Meaning they will give everyone a liposuction procedure, just because they are a laser center for liposuction. The problem with this is that these patients may have been better candidates for a Tummy Tuck and so on.

Comparing Good and Bad Plastic Surgery Before and After Photos

Below I’ve bumped up some “bad results” after photos next to Dr. Thomas’ before and after photos. You will see the difference.

Let’s look at the photos below to compare:

(A unnamed Laser Center Laser Lipo Before & After Photos – No American Board of Plastic Surgery Physicians on Staff)

This is laser lipo. See the Irregularities in the skin (after photo). Lumps, bumps and deep wholes. This is because the laser can melt through the fat too quickly and burn too close to the skin. After the laser damages a certain layer of fat too close to the skin (deep burn), it produces a lumpy effect. A typical Patient surfing the net for before and after photos won’t know to look for this type of irregularity. Patients typically will only look at the amount of fat that has been removed but not the total end results.

Who are good candidates for Liposuction:
Good Candidates for a liposuction procedure do not have a lot of excess skin. In fact liposuction removes fat only, it does not remove skin. If someone has really good tight skin that is firm and tight and you remove fat form under it, it can look great. On the other hand if a patient has loose hanging skin, which most women do if they’ve had children. If that is the case lipo would be the wrong procedure and could make the stomach look even worse. It would take out the fat but leave the skin even looser.

Candidates for a Tummy Tuck
A good candidate for Tummy Tuck has loose excess skin and week bulging abdominal muscles. A tummy tuck is a big operation and it definitely has some downtime. During a tummy tuck the extra skin that is stretched out through pregnancy is removed from the lower part of the tummy. Then the skin form the upper part of the tummy is pulled down. The muscles underneath are also tightened. There’s a scar that goes around the belly button and another from hipbone to hip bone along the lower bikini line.

Breasts and Mommy Makeovers…

In addition to wreaking havoc on our midsection, pregnancy and nursing can also impact a woman’s breasts. After a woman has nursed, a lot of times the skin is stretched out because the breast’s have been engorged. 1. Are the results of Liposuction permanent? Can the fat come back?

We all carry a certain number of fat cells in our body. When we gain weight we do not add more fat cells, instead each existing fat cell becomes larger. With the above knowledge in mind, we can safely say that the results of Liposuction are permanent unless one puts on excess weight; in which case the suctioned areas will expand much less than the rest of the body.

2. How much does liposuction surgery cost?

The cost of Liposuction is determined by the time it takes to perform the procedure. The more areas to be suctioned the higher will be the cost. The exact cost of Liposuction can only be determined after an examination during the consultation.

3. Will liposuction tighten up loose skin?

Since Liposuction creates a wound under the skin and all wounds heal by a certain amount of contracting and shrinking the skin over the Liposuctioned area usually shrinks to a certain degree. If the skin is minimally loose it usually shrinks nicely, if it is very loose it will not shrink significantly.

4. Is it true that other areas get fat after liposuction?

There is no evidence that suctioning one area will result in weight gain in other areas, unless one actually put on weight in which case unsuctioned areas will expand more than the suctioned ones which may give an impression that fat has crept to the rest of the body.

5. Is liposuction surgery painful?

Pain after Liposuction is less than other surgeries because there are no large incisions. Patients usually experience moderate amount of soreness during the first few days which is easily controlled with prescribed pain medication. Some patients will bruise which is treated with natural medication such as Arnica.

6. When can exercising be resumed?

Walking is encouraged early on, however active exercise should be avoided for 4 weeks and the tight garment provided should be worn for 6 weeks.
