Over Exposure The Summer Sun

Summer’s here everyone and whether you are a fan of it or not the fact remains you are being exposed! Natural Sunlight does stimulate the production of vitamin D but more times than not we become over exposed to the sun’s UVA and UVB rays and end up with sun damaged skin. You don’t have to spend time at the beach or doing outdoor activities to be over exposed. Daily commutes and running errands can also cause skin damage if you are not protected!

Protection is a Must!

Taking care of your skin, the largest body organ and protecting it at all times is key!
With solar flares being at it’s peak in 2013 it seems wise to take extra precaution and be more aware of our actions. I always make sure before I head out in the mornings to apply a high spf suncreen lotion such as NIA’s Sun Damage Prevention SPF 30 to my face, neck, hands and shoulders. I usually use an over the counter brand sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher for my arms and legs or feet depending specifically on my attire for that day. Sometimes reapplying your spf lotion throughout the day is necessary if you are going to be outdoors for extended periods.

Visible Unwanted Damage

Your daily skin care regimen is a very crucial routine that will eventually reap the results of what you sow! Being in my late 30′s with combination skin and in the past have experienced the pitfalls of not keeping up with only the best care for my skin. Sun spots, wrinkles, loss of skin elacticity and uneven skin tone are all unwanted but natural results of the aging and sun damage process.

My personal skincare solution

How to get rid of love handles

“Muffin Top”, “Love Handles”, “Hip Rolls” or just plain annoying, are the bulges on the sides above the hips. They are unwanted fatty deposits seen in both men and women. The cause for these “Love Handles” seems to be hormonal and some what gender specific. In men the “love handles” are usually at a slightly higher level and fill the lower parts of the flanks. Love handles in women are right above the pelvic bone sitting on the hips extending beyond the sides towards the back. Love handles in women are sometimes termed as Hip Rolls because of their roll like shape and location above the hips.

The reason why they seem to be under the influence of hormones is because of their difference in shape and location and lack of response dieting and exercising. Many patients tell me their love handles/hip rolls “run in my family.” It’s true genetic does play a part in these unwanted fatty deposits. The size of the Love Handles can increase with weight gain but may not disappear with exercise and diet or may easily appear at the first sign of weight gain.

If you have tried diet and exercise and have zero or little luck expelling your love handles the best way to get rid of Love handles is Lipo Sculpture.

Some doctors may use large cannulas for the suctioning fat. Large cannulas, suction out more fat with each pass, rather than the smaller cannulas (3mm) used with Lipo Sculpture. FDA Banned and Subsequently Allowed Silicone Implants

Why did the FDA ban silicone implants in the first place?

The ban occurred for a number of reasons:

Ø Pressure from the media, trial lawyers, and various activist groups was intense after the Connie Chung show in 1990.

Ø There was fear that they were not safe.

Ø They were never approved by the FDA to begin with. They were “grandfathered in 1976 when the FDA began the process of approval as a formal process.

Even though there was a large amount of research including animal data and human data on the safety of these devices, the FDA elected to take implants off the market entirely at first and then allowed their use in reconstruction only. As of November 17, 2006 the FDA lifted the ban on the use of silicone implants for breast augmentation surgery. This was because 14 years of research in the U.S. and abroad found no connection between silicone implants and all the diseases claimed by women to be associated with their silicone implants. That means that women desiring breast augmentation surgery have the option of choosing a silicone gel filled implant for her augmentation. This choice will have a number of requirements imposed by the FDA. The FDA is requiring, or at least strongly suggesting, MRI examinations after the first three years and every two years following that. Also the patient must be a minimum of 22 years of age (18 years of age minimum for saline implants).

 Many of us may think that a seemingly small imbalance, such as inverted nipples of the breast should not be of great concern in our overall appearance or self worth. Unfortunately this is a common issue that does seem to have a profound impact on those who have lived with nipple inversion for quite sometime.
Lack of Sensuality and Functionality

Not only may it be aesthetically unappealing to the eye of the beholder, but it can carry other complications as well. In some cases the absence of nipple stimulation can cause a lack of sensual femininity about their bare body and sexuality. Even wearing certain clothes such as swimwear or lingerie can cause embarrassment due to the obvious appearance of nipple inversion. Functionality is just as much, if not more, a vital concern for those with more severe cases. For new mothers it can be very difficult and frustrating to breast feed since the baby cannot suckle effectively from lack of nipple projection.
What causes Inverted Nipple?

The condition of Inverted Nipples are usually due to the presence of tight or short ligaments within the nipple, which pull the end of the nipple deep down into the breast tissue. Inverted Nipples look flat, small and sunken without the ability to pop out and stay firm. In mild cases the inverted nipple corrects itself temporarily when it is stimulated by touch or cold. In severe cases however, nipple stimulation does not correct the problem.
How can Nipple Inversion be corrected?

What many do not realize, is the ease and quick recovery of Inverted Nipple Correction surgery.

This surgery requires a procedure that disconnects the ligaments allowing the nipple to rise to its natural projection. Surgery is performed through a minimal incision, leaving a minimal, if any, scar. Local anesthetic is all that is required. The operation is not overly painful and post operative discomfort is easily controlled with prescribed pain medication.
                                                                                                          
**Patients can resume their normal physical activity within only days, except touching and stimulation may cause soreness for up to 1 -2 weeks.**

What is Botox?

Botulinum Toxin Type A, better known as Botox is a purified toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum.  It is commonly used for minimizing the visibility of  frown lines and wrinkles. The Botox is injected in very small amounts directly into the muscle where the frown lines and wrinkles are prominent. The injection causes temporary paralysis of those muscles so that the lines will noticeably fade.
Can Botox Prevent Wrinkles?

What Causes Frown Lines?

To reach an optimal aesthetic result, it is recommended that you have a qualified doctor consult with you and advise you on the best course of action.

			Plastic Surgeon Dr. Ivan Thomas Repairs Gauged Earlobe
When you are young it may seem like a good idea to place an extremely large earring in your ear. However, as you get older, or if you are trying to look for employment, a person may grow tired of the extremely large hole in their ear. It may be difficult to find a skilled surgeon, who may or may not be able to repair the damage of stretched earlobe piercing.
This much is true for Patient Eric Anderson. Who in his teenage years began Gauge piercing his ears. Now that he is 32 years old he wants to become an EMT and his possible employers have told him because of safety reasons he cannot pursue his new found career goals. After searching for the right person to repair his ears he realizes that it is not an “easy” fix.
Eric came to Dr. Thomas with over 1” openings in his ear lobes.
Patient had Gauged Piercing Repaired
His ornate collection of Gauge earrings range from bamboo discs to flashy rhinestone hoops. Eric say’s “it was a conscious decision” when he began the Gauging process. Now he wants to have his earlobes repaired from the years of stretching and he knows that it will take a skilled plastic surgeon to complete the procedure. This type of repair is so new that there is not even a term in Plastic Surgery for it.
This story has grabbed the attention of the media. In fact that story was featured on ABC’s Channel 7, Los Angeles with Medical Reporter, Denise Dador, on August 18th 2009. Eric’s case is quite unique in that the ear tissue has been pulled and stretched so much, that not much of the normal ear tissue is intact. Watch the story on ABC.
Dr. Thomas had to use his T-incision advanced technique to repair the earlobe. A procedure of this nature will have to be performed under anesthesia and the procedures can take up to 5 hours. The cost to repair an earlobe of this nature can run anywhere from $1,500 to $3,000 per ear.
Eric’s Update:
Eric’s surgery was completed successfully and he is recovery right now. The stitches have been removed however it will be few months before we will see the brilliant results of his earlobe repair.

“TRICK” PHOTOGRAPHY

Inconsistencies in photography on a Dr.’s website may lead many patients to believe that the work produced is accurate and esthetically pleasing. The trained eye knows what to look for.

Distance – The distance between the before and after can be farther apart tricking the eye to think the patient looks smaller. Lighting – Brighter lighting after shots can portray better results and may not show irregularities. Arms Up & Down – Patients may have their arms up for the after picture making Breast Lifts & Tummy Tucks appear better.
