Mommy Makeover } Script for KCAL 9 Mother’s Day Special

Recently Dr. Thomas was featured on KCAL 9′s Mother’s Day Special. In the segment he was interviewed and discussed his world renouned procedures in Plastic Surgery that he has cleverly coined “Mommy Makeover”. The show aired Thursday, May 7th, 2009. We have included the actual pre-written script for your review. There is quite a bit of interesting information on Mommy Makeover and the procedures that Dr. Ivan Thomas performs to turn back the hands of time for many mothers in America.

How would you like to look 10 years younger the next time you look in the mirror?

Dr. Thomas is considered a top doctor in the world of Mommy Makeovers. He has been making over Mommy’s at his two locations in Los Angeles & Lancaster for 28 years. Doctor Thomas is known for his Non Surgical Face Lift, Exoderm, that removes 10-15 years off your face in just one in office treatment, breast lift procedures that leave zero scars and Tummy Tucks that give you back your pre-pregnancy tummy and waistline.

Q & A:

Q. What is a Mommy Makeover?

A: A Mommy Makeover consists of a number of procedures that help Mommy’s turn back the clock to regain pre-aging/pregnancy face and bodies. Three of the most common Mommy Makeover procedures that I perform are: Tummy Tucks, Breast Lifts, and a wonderful non-surgical Face Lift.

Q. Why are your Tummy Tucks so effective and different from other Tummy Tucks?

A: During pregnancy Mommy’s will experience stretching of the abdominal muscles and skin.

This is what creates a bulgy and saggy appearance. In most cases no amount of exercise will correct this.

Bulgy & Sagging Post Pregnancy Tummy

I perform a Tummy Tuck procedure that is called a High Lateral Tension Tummy Tuck. That is where instead of just stitching the muscles tighter from chest bone to pelvic region I criss-cross stitch the muscles starting from the flanks and down the chest bone and pelvic creating a tight defined curvaceous waist line and flat and tight Tummy. Patients end up with the effect of looking like they had never been pregnant; getting back their pre-pregnancy bodies.

Q. Tell us about your Non Surgical face lift?

A: My non-surgical face lift, Exoderm, is performed at my certified Surgery Center in Beverly Hills. In just one treatment this non-surgical face lift naturally, safely and effectively removes 10 years or more off your face. What’s so great about this face lift is that unlike a traditional face lift that requires cutting; it will lift your face from the underlying tissues of the skin as well as erase a lifetime of sun damage, hyper-pigmentation, deep wrinkles and grooves as well as deep acne scars and pores. It’s a great way for Mommy’s look refreshed, rejuvenated and more youthful.

Q. We heard you had a unique technique called the “Invisible Breast Lift” a no scar breast lift. Tell us about that.

A: Mommy’s like this procedure especially since breasts deflate and sag after breast feeding. The “Invisible Breast Lift” or internal mastopexy with augmentation, is a breast lift technique that does not leave the traditional lollipop scar. This breast lift procedure is done in conjunction with an implant. This is achieved by lifting the breast from the inside; utilizing muscles to create a lift without cutting. The only incision needed is the one that is created to place the implant.

Top Mommy Makeover Procedures

By: Ivan Thomas

mother2.jpg picture by promothomasThe desire to become a mom is such a strong emotional feeling. This most precious gift, this bundle of joy can create changes for a mothers body which can be undesirable.

The process of pregnancy leaves permanent effects which are mostly on the breasts and abdomen.  These effects can also be seen in the hips, thighs, and arms.  Generalized weight gain and water retention cause enlargement of the breasts and bulging of the abdomen.  The overstretched skin becomes more noticeable after delivery.  The breast and abdomen become deflated, and saggy.

This creates emotional stress for women. Dieting and exercise can only achieve so much as the overstretched skin and weakened abdominal muscle will almost never return to the condition prior to pregnancy.  The good news is that most of these undesirable results of pregnancy and child bearing can be corrected by a combination of plastic surgery procedures collectively called a “Mommy Makeover”.

Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

Before               After

As the baby grows it stretches the abdominal skin and also thins out and weakens the abdominal muscles.  In addition the “abs” spread apart in the middle, and no are no longer capable of holding the abdominal organs “the guts” deep inside the tummy where they belong.  Therefore the inner organs push from the inside out creating the typical after pregnancy tummy bulge.  While exercising and dieting can help a little, the overstretched skin and muscles will almost never return to their prior to pregnancy condition unless they are corrected surgically.  Most women are under the impression that a few months of working out will tighten the skin.  This is almost impossible, as there are no muscles in the skin.  An overstretched skin needs to be removed.  Abdominoplasty is the procedure which removes the excess skin and tightens the overstretched and weakened muscles restoring the pre-pregnancy figure.  I do prefer the newer “high lateral tension” technique which creates a tighter, shapelier, and more feminine abdomen and waistline.  The procedure is done under general anesthesia.  Recovery is approximately two weeks.  The incision is made low at the pubic hairline, so that it can be concealed nicely.  All suturing is done under the skin so there is no need for suture removal.

Breast Lift/ Mastopexy

Before                     After

Pregnancy and breast feeding often take their toll on the breasts causing a loss of substance and severe sagging.  Women with sagging breasts often feel a loss of feminine appeal.  This overall deflation is mainly due to a loss of baby weight, breast tissue, and an inability of the overstretched skin to shrink.  Mastopexy is the operation which removes the excessive loose skin and lifts the breasts and nipples to their original youthful position.  The sagging breast tissues are elevated and pushed up to fill the flatness which is commonly seen at the top of the breasts, restoring the perky, youthful appearance.  Recovery time is about one week.  Stitching is done underneath the skin with absorbable sutures, so there are no stitches to be removed.

Before                        After

Having full, firm, and perky breasts is a desire of every woman.  Unfortunately breast tissue loss, laxity of the skin, and shrinkage, of the breast size is almost inevitable after pregnancy and breast feeding.  It is not uncommon to see a C-cup breast shrink to an A-cup after delivery and breast feeding.  This loss of the symbol of femininity is very undesirable and unwelcome in women who have become moms.  Breast augmentation whether with silicone or saline implants is the ideal procedure to restore the youthful breast size, shape, and feel.  I prefer the implants be placed under the chest muscle as this creates a more natural shape and feel.  The recovery after breast implant surgery is only one week.

Other procedures that can help turn back the clock to a pre-pregnancy face & body are: Liposcultpture, which can address arms, legs, thighs and backs. Exoderm a non surgical face lift wich can erase 10-15 years off your face, lift the skin, earse hyperpigmentation, sun dammage, fine lines and deep wrinkles.

What are your options for sagging breasts… Implants, Breast Lift or both?

Sagging breasts can cause a woman to feel less desirable as the breasts lose the youthful appearance and firm feel. The extent of sagging determines the procedure necessary for correction.

Patients with moderate sagging who are also considering Breast Augmentation will likely benefit from the Internal Mastopexy technique which is a unique method Dr. Thomas has developed.

Internal Mastopexy in conjuction with Breast Implants, lifts the breasts internally improving the nipple position. This procedure does not require additional scars and the result is remarkable for the right candidate. Due to the location of the incision, Internal Mastopexy is considered a scarless Mastopexy.

Patients with severe sagging usually require Full Mastopexy possibly followed by Breast Augmentation. For Full Mastopexy, incisions are made around the areola and also under the fold of the breast. If patient desires Breast Augmentation after a Full Mastopexy, Dr. Thomas recommends that the patient wait 6 months after the Breast Lift for optimal result with minimal complications.

If the Breast Augmentation and Full Mastopexy are performed at the same time, which many doctors do, the result is highly unpredictable and the scars are generally unsightly.

Dr. Thomas has always followed his professional expertise by allowing the breasts to heal for 6 months before performing breast augmentation.

We have had numerous patients who against Dr. Thomas’ recommendations chose to have Full Mastopexy with Breast Augmentation simultanously done else where return to us with poor results and regrets for not listening to an honest surgeon’s opinion.

The recovery time for Breast Augmentation with Internal Mastopexy or Full Mastopexy is approximately 7 to 10 days.

Thoughts on choosing between Saline VS. Silicone

For women choosing breast augmentation who already have a modest amount of normal breast tissue and subcutaneous fatty tissue, either type of implant will normally be very satisfactory and often almost undistinguishable.  This also applies to women desiring a very minimal augmentation.

For women choosing breast augmentation who are relatively thin or have relatively little breast tissue, sub muscular placement can greatly minimize the undesirable properties of the saline implant.  This is why sub muscular placement is virtually always used in patients who have had mastectomies undergoing reconstruction even with silicone gel filled implants.

For women choosing breast augmentation who are extremely thin and with minimal breast tissue the silicone gel filled implant has a number of advantages particularly when it comes to the issues of rippling and “natural feel”.  These implants may be placed sub muscular or under the breast tissue at the discretion of the surgeon
